Overview
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a group of active and experienced scientists. Sea Search studies a wide range of marine mammal species in southern Africa, with a strong emphasis on ecology and bioacoustics methods. This opportunity offers the chance to learn field and analytical skills for a range of research methods from designing and conducting surveys, photographic identification, acoustic data, biological sampling, behavioural sampling and shore-based tracking of animals.

Why do Photo IDs?
This method is widely used around the world and is a fundamental skill in any marine mammal biologists toolbox. It allows us to study whole populations at the level of the individual, from movements and residency to abundance and survival. The course covers the background theory for mark-recapture, camera use, camera field skills, and an introduction to available manual and automated matching systems.

Location
This training course takes place in Langebaan along the west coast of South Africa, a marine biologist’s dream. Get off the beaten track and enjoy the beautiful coastline, the long empty beaches, and the traditional fishing villages. The west coast of South Africa is raw and authentic, where rocky inlets and shelly beaches intersect with dramatic sunsets and breaching whales.

The West Coast is a nature lover’s paradise! Langebaan is particularly great for beach walks along the lagoon, grabbing a coffee at a selection of cosy coffee shops, swimming, kayaking, kiteboarding, and fishing. Langebaan is known as the ornithological capital of South Africa, with rich bird life right on your doorstep. Explore the West Coast National Park, with various native species and extensive beds of blooming native flowers.
