Overview
This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a group of active and experienced scientists. Sea Search studies a wide range of marine mammal species in southern Africa, with a strong emphasis on ecology and bioacoustics methods. This opportunity offers the chance to learn field and analytical skills for a range of research methods from designing and conducting surveys, photographic identification, acoustic data, biological sampling, behavioural sampling and shore-based tracking of animals.

Testimonial
Doing this marine mammal research internship was the best experience I’ve ever had! I’ve never seen so many passionate researchers in one place, always happy, helpful and full of knowledge about cetaceans to share! During my time I worked on a research project on the prevalence of skin diseases, parasites, shark bites, entanglement and deformities of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins around the South African coast.

Why do Photo IDs?
This method is widely used around the world and is a fundamental skill in any marine mammal biologists toolbox. It allows us to study whole populations at the level of the individual, from movements and residency to abundance and survival. The course covers the background theory for mark-recapture, camera use, camera field skills, and an introduction to available manual and automated matching systems.

Highlights
Work alongside scientists and students with a strong academic background in the area of marine mammal science to develop your career in this field. Take part in exciting, ongoing research of Humpback whales, Cape fur seals and Heaviside’s dolphins among others. Experience the West Coast of South Africa, just minutes from the West Coast National Park, and just 90 minutes north of the beautiful city of Cape Town.
