Nepal Community Medical Volunteer – Help Remote Communities Access Healthcare
Make an Impact in Medical Care Across Nepal
Whether in the bustling cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara or the serene rural landscapes, volunteers are crucial in various medical projects across Nepal. From government hospitals to remote health camps, your contribution as a Nepal community medical volunteer can save lives and provide essential care.
Diverse Opportunities for Medical Volunteers
Our programme offers two distinct experiences:
- Long-Term Hospital Placements: Ideal for medical students, especially those on electives, this option involves working in government hospitals in Kathmandu or Pokhara for one to five months.
- Short-Term Medical Camps: Set up health camps in rural areas, bringing much-needed medical services to communities without access to professional healthcare.
Medical Treks and Rural Health Camps
Essential Care in Nepal’s Remote Areas
In rural Nepal, basic medical care can mean the difference between life and death. Volunteers help provide first aid, basic health checks (like blood pressure and blood glucose testing), and medical education. Each camp, consisting of around eight volunteers accompanied by Nepali doctors and a translator, is a unique blend of trekking and service, reaching remote or isolated areas in dire need of medical attention.
The Challenge and Reward of Rural Healthcare
These camps, held annually in July/August for approximately two weeks, are challenging yet incredibly fulfilling. They’re a chance to make a significant impact in areas where professional medical care is scarce. ** For 2025, watch this space for the dates – please email us if you want to see the detailed itinerary! **
Volunteering in Government Hospitals in Kathmandu and Pokhara
A Glimpse into Nepal’s Healthcare System
In Kathmandu, volunteers have the opportunity to work in Nepal’s only government hospital for children, engaging in various departments including Oncology, Cardio, ICU, and more. In Pokhara, the WRH hospital offers a chance to experience a busy medical environment, contributing to numerous departments in a large, bustling setting.
Requirements and Impact
These placements are tailored for medical students or those in the medical field, requiring a university letter for participation. While direct patient care isn’t possible without a Nepali medical licence, the observational and supportive roles you play are invaluable to both the patients and local staff.
