Food, Lodging and Travel
Volunteers live in a 6 person cabin situated in the beautiful hillsides near the wolf sanctuary. The standard accommodation option is sharing a room with up to 4 people in a large wooden 6 person house, but we have other options available at an extra cost if you require more privacy, such as booking a private double room in the 6 person house. Depending on if you are an individual or a group/couple and whether you require a private room or are happy to share a room, we can suggest an option to fit your needs. In the house, there is a kitchen and the bathroom is shared by all occupants.
The house is equipped with a washing machine, stove, oven, microwave, fridge/freezer and cooking utensils. We provide towels and blankets.
Meals are not included in the project cost. The house has a kitchen and cooking appliances and also a fridge/freezer. Volunteers are taken grocery shopping once a week to a large supermarket where virtually all kinds of foods can be found. Vegetarians/vegans can also find items here like tofu and seitan. Volunteers can prepare the meals in a group or as individuals.
Travel
This project is located in Gradil, close to the city of Mafra. You will need to fly to Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, and from there take a train, taxi or bus to Mafra (about a 1-hour journey). We will arrange to pick you up at the closest bus stop to the sanctuary, which is at Vale da Guarda, Mafra. Volunteers must arrive at this pick-up point between 11AM-12 noon on their chosen start date. You will be dropped off at the same location and time on the last day of your project. We will provide detailed instructions on getting to the project prior to your arrival. If you wish to fly out on the last day of your project, please book your flight to leave in the afternoon to allow you enough time to get to the airport.
During your free weekends, you will have time to explore nearby tourist sights in Mafra, Lisbon, Sintra, etc. by bus, taxi or train. This is not included in the project costs, but the project staff are happy to give you tips on transportation and places to visit.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers must be aged 20+, be in good physical condition, able to work as part of a team and be self-motivated when carrying out a range of tasks. You should expect to be doing lots of manual work, in a hot climate. You will be carrying heavy items and the tasks can be repetitive. Volunteers will also work with spades, hoes, and similar tools. Volunteers should be fluent in English or Portuguese.
