Wildlife Conservation & San Bushmen Community Project, Namibia

  • Get involved in research of wild dogs and lions in the Namib Desert
  • Help to protect, rehabilitate and care for vulnerable wildlife at the Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Join specialist wildlife rehabilitation courses and anti-poaching Rhino teams
  • Experience the traditional culture of the San Bushmen people and learn about their ancestral skills

Project Costs

The cost for 2 weeks is £1095, 3 weeks is £1535, 4 weeks is £1975, 5 weeks is £2405, 6 weeks is £2835.  This is the cost for Wildlife Sanctuary & Wildlife Sanctuary San Bushmen Experience, and Medical volunteers.

For TimBila, Coastal Conservation and Kanaan Conservation volunteers, the cost is £1235 for 2 weeks, 3 weeks is £1750, 4 weeks is £2265.

For the Neuras Adventure week, the cost is £725 for 1 week.

For the Lianshulu Programme based in the breathtaking Zambezi region, the cost is £1495 for 1 week (as includes flying in/out to get there and exclusive guest accommodation, also note single supplement is applied in addition).

If you want to split projects and do 1 week of one project on top of several weeks of others, you can do so.  In addition, if you need to spend an extra night before or after at the Wildlife Sanctuary when transferring to and from Kanaan, TimBila or Neuras, the cost is £75 per night. For the Rhino Rangers Anti-Poaching 7 day special programme, the cost is £849.

To secure your placement on the project, you will need to complete and submit the application form with your application payment of £250 (included in the total project costs listed above). If for some reason, your application is not accepted, we will reimburse this payment fully. However, for those who are accepted, you will need to pay 25% of the balance within 14 days of being accepted on the programme, with the remaining 75% of the balance to be paid 8 weeks before arrival. Once we have confirmed your place, you will receive a pre-departure package with all detailed information on the project, details on the work you will be doing, suggested items to bring etc.

Project Dates

You may stay from 2 weeks (we can make exceptions if you want to come for less than 2 weeks) to 3 months at any start or end date. We provide free transfers from either Windhoek centre or the airport. So the Monday start dates below are just a guideline – we can tailor the programme to suit your dates and interests, and you are most welcome to stay for any duration up to 12 weeks.

Volunteers hiking in Kanaan Desert in NamibiaDepartures can occur on any day at any time with a transfer to the airport or Windhoek included in the cost of the programme.

Transfers to Neuras, TimBila and Kanaan happen on Saturdays. If you wish to do research in your first week (or do research the entire time), then we advise that you arrive on a Thursday prior, so that you can have the induction on Friday.

Transfers to Harnas Wildlife Sanctuary and San Bushmen Experience occur on Mondays. Transfers to and from the Coastal Conservation programme occur on Fridays.  Lianshulu transfers are on Mondays.

Transfers to the Medical clinic occur every 2nd Sunday. You can arrive on any date prior to the Sunday you leave, where you will be stationed at the Sanctuary until the Sunday you are transferred to the clinic. You will come back 12 days later on the following Friday. For those with limited availability, we also offer a Sunday to Friday (5 day participation) and a Friday to Friday (7 day participation) at the clinic.  

The Rhino Rangers Anti-Poaching project starts on every Tuesday. It finishes 7 days later on a Tuesday. Please note, we require min 2 people to run this (ideal for a group booking).

For the dates below, they relate to the Monday arrivals for Wildlife Sanctuary & Equine programme (every Monday and Thursday arrival is possible even if not listed, unless marked as fully booked).

If you wish to join TimBila, Neuras or Kanaan, you can head to those after a few days at the Wildlife Sanctuary.  For Rhino Rangers, they run Tuesday to Tuesday (7 days on a fixed itinerary).

For specific projects, such as the Medical Clinic and specialised courses, dates are specific and listed below. For the medical clinic, you can split into 5 day and 7 day dates too. Please just specify that when you are applying.  You will be able to specify your preferred dates (and locations) in the motivation letter section on the application form too.
