Maldives Island Project – Medical Programme

High quality healthcare is incredibly important in any community, and ours is no different. Naifaru is the central hub for medical care in the Lhaviyani Atoll, serving over 13,000 people as the only island with a hospital. Although our hospital has high standards and is well-equipped, we are faced with numerous challenges associated with being based on a remote island in a developing country. On our medical placement programme, volunteers are placed within Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital where they can get experience in a variety of departments, shadowing our local doctors and nurses. On a daily basis, volunteers will spend time interacting with our community members, gaining hands-on practical skills, and experiencing the unique challenges our medical teams face. This gives volunteers an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a completely different setting and, in return, the community gains the benefits of international expertise. As a volunteer, you are provided a life changing experience that will not only enhance your professional career, but change your appreciation for medicine.

What to Expect

• Shadow a doctor or nurse in Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital to gain international medical experience
• Work across a variety of specialisms including: dentistry, nursing, midwifery, paediatrics, anaesthetic or general practice
• Engage with the local community and accompany doctors on home visits
• Live in the ‘real’ Maldives in a friendly community who will welcome you with open arms
• Hone practical skills to enhance future career prospects
• Enjoy weekly activities including snorkelling, excursions to uninhabited islands, BBQs and more

Requirements

Before you sign up for volunteering in our Medical Placement Programme, you should take note of the few requirements listed below. To volunteer on this programme, you should:

• Be minimum 18 years old
• Have either a degree in a healthcare related field OR proof of enrollment with a letter of recommendation
• Be willing to stay for a minimum of 4 weeks and eligible for a business visa
• Be open minded towards other cultures
• Be willing to commit yourself to helping our community
• Bring your own snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel and fins)
